Expert advice for community action groups

You may be a member of a local community group which is involved in a campaign to save a heritage building or to prevent an unwanted development. I can help with concise, informed advice and a road map to help you, step by step.

Some issues I can help with

  • Is your community worried about the likely impacts of a new development?
  • Is your group concerned about preserving a heritage building or asset?
  • Would your group like to improve a new or existing park or public place?
  • Does your group have a good design idea for a local project that you'd like to propose to your community and to your council?
  • Does your group need help in preparing a submission to the council or Government on a controversial planning proposal?
  • Does your group need help in interpreting complex plans and technical reports?

My approach

  • We meet and discuss your group's concerns to establish an understanding of the matter at stake. At that meeting I would provide preliminary verbal advice, to be followed – at the request of your group - by a detailed proposal and action plan. One or more meetings would follow, depending on the complexity of the matter at hand. The matter of fees – if any – would be negotiated and agreed.
  • If your situation requires more in-depth consideration, I would help you to design a program of work covering information gathering, research, and advice on strategic actions, with timings.
  • After agreement on fee and proposal, I would execute the work and report to your group on my findings, with advice and recommendations as to further action if necessary. Presentation at a community meeting is an option. Follow-up may be vital: if so, we will agree as to who does what, and when. I would provide contacts, ideas, suggestions – even warnings! – until the matter is put to bed to your satisfaction.
